Iron deficiency is the main cause of anaemia, which is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting 29% of non-pregnant women, 38% of pregnant women, and 43% of children worldwide.
The World Health Organization has just released new guidelines on this important topic.
The guidelines are not least intended for policy makers to give advice on how to monitor population’s iron status. The guidelines include simple criteria for ferritin (stored iron) as the marker for iron status.
